Buccaneers GM play 2019

2019.03.10. 20:10

This isn’t my first battle plan but the first in English.

2018 was a difficult year to the Buccaneers and for all of their fans (including me) which caused to the fire of Dirk Koetter. The first mayor step forward was the hiring of Bruce Arians and Co.

BA is a well-known offensive guru (just what we thought about Koetter too) a two time Super Bowl champ with the Steelers and two time Coach of the Year. Koetter and Coach Monken built up a TOP5 offense last year even though the QB controversy.  Thanks for this we have a very strong core in offense. In my battle plan the focus goes to the defense (spoiler altert) like the previous years. I can't undress the fact that I'm a lover of defensive football.

BA declared that he wants to win now and not build for the future.

On the other hand last year we also hoped some kind of win now. For sure that was a difference between the Licht’s win now and the Rams way of win now. As a fan I really hope that a better coaching and few personal changes brings some kind of success to the Tampa area!

Let's see my win now way:

Currently the Bucs have 1 721 449 $ under the cap which is the least in the league. So there is a need to free up some money.

On the other hand the long term sustainability is a big question. The team lost the chance to win something under Jameis (and other core players) rookie deal so I expect that the big house cleaning will come next year…

CUTS:

DeSean Jackson WR / 10 million $

Based on two years experience there is no juice between DeSean and Jameis. There was a better connection between DeSean and Fitzmagic which occurred a polarized locker room. Fitzmagic going to leave in FA and I really do not seem better connection between Jameis and DeSean.

Last offseason was also strong in words, to build chemistry and things like that… On the field? Nothing converted from the words.

The Bucs need that 10 million to strength the roster. DeSean also declared several times that he wants to leave the sunny Tampa area. Win-win situation.

I do not think that the presence of BA will solve this connection problem…

Beau Allen DT / 5 million $

Last years main task was to beef up the D-line. Well, those FA signs wasn’t turned to be successful. The Bucs already parted ways with Vinny Curry so here is the time to part ways with the rest of them.

Mitch Unrein DT / 3,75 million $

Same as Allen with even less production from last year thanks for an injury.

Will Gholston DE / 3.75 million $

This was a long try between the Bucs and Gholston. He is expendable in my eyes from years now. Here is the right time to move on. This year’s draft in D-line is very strong so there is some intriguing options.

Bryan Anger P / 3 million $

A punter for 3 million is a luxury for the Bucs in the current cap / roster situation.

Ryan Smith CB / 2,025 million $

This cut would left nearly 150k $ dead money in the cap.

A depth piece in this league worst secondary does not worth 2 million from the cap.

Evan Smith C / 2 million $

Once arrived for starting center. Nowadays capable back-up from center to guard.

RE-SIGNS:

Peyton Barber RB / 2,5 million $ for 1 year

TRADES:

Drew Stanton / QB / from Browns / in exchange: 2019 7th rounder

Licht seventh round picks was missed goals in the recent years. BA wants a backup QB who knows his system.

“I always like to have a backup quarterback who knows my system” – Bruce Arians: The Quarterback Whisperer

FA SIGNS:

Tyrann Mathieu S / 7,5 million$ per year (total 4 years and 30 million$)

The arrival of Tyrann seems to be too evident. Recruited by BA, mutual respect, knows the Bowles system, etc.

It’s too good to be true.

The 2019 safety free agent market is loaded as hell. What we saw last year that the position is under valued, there were a lot of good safeties on the market too but they found a new team for themselves very hard and under their value.

Here is the 2019 list: Earl Thomas, Tyrann Mathieu, Landon Collins, Ha Ha Clinton-Dix, Tashaun Gipson, Kenny Vaccaro and the list can be continued.

You can line-up nearly three Pro Bowl safety tandem from this list and Weddle already found new home in Los Angeles.

Deone Bucannon LB / 5 million$ per year (total 3 years and 15million$)

Ok I know. It’s time for the Arizona -> Tampa Bay player wandering. Now it seems 99% that Kwon will leave Tampa Bay this year. I will be very disappointed and sad because I really like the guy, the motor and the ultimate leadership what he meant for this team. He was a bargain in the rookie price so I truly accept that he wants money. And Tampa can’t afford that money.

Here comes Bucannon (Buccaneer :) ) to the picture. He can be the cheaper solution and also well known by Arians & Co. He knows the system and he can put his carrier back on track.

It would be nice to get him bit cheaper.

Than here is an option A and an option B:

Option A:

Jamie Collins OLB / 5 million$ per year (total 2 years and 10million$)

There is a history between BA and the fired Patriots players (I see you Chandler Jones). Of course Jamie Collins is an unfulfilled player and not on the same page with Jones. There is a possibility to get him on discounted price to a prove it 2 years bargain deal. I would be shocked If he get a massive payday somewhere with 17,5 career sacks.

Option B:

Morris Claiborne CB / 7 million$ per year (total 2 years and 14 million$)

For first I did not calculate with CB. But after a deep dive there is a huge need to fill the position with a CB1/CB2. Claiborne not the best solution on the market but in this plan I need to find a cheap solution next to Carlton Davis. Tod Bowles knows him from the Big Apple so Claiborne is familiar with the system. And compared to his previous years he seemed to be back on track last year under Bowles.

If I need to choose from the above I will go for the option B.

So! Lets see the draft and get some young talent.

DRAFT:

My mock draft was simulated with the Draft Network draft engine.

1/5 Quinnen Williams DL / Alabama

When you have a guy above 300lbs who can run a 40 yard like he flies (4.83). And you can grab him at the 5th spot? No brainer! Williams is a superb athlete with freakish skill set. This can be an easy pick when you think about McCoy future in Tampa.

The modern NFL defenses cut ties with the traditional 4-3 or 3-4 looks. If you want to pursuit the modern happy-passing offenses you need to be versatile. One think that I know: the Arians/Bowles defense going to be a hell of an aggressive defense so just imagine the Williams – Vea – McCoy trio for 2019

2/39 Chris Lindstrom IOL / Boston College

The former 3 star recruit Chris Lindstrom blow up Indy with a great performance. 2nd best time in the 40’ with 4.91. 30.5 vertical jump and second best broad with 117. And solid agility times. Most importantly he is an instant replacement in the RG spot in my mind.

3/70 Michael Deiter OT / Wisconsin

I really like this year offensive line from Wisconsin. Deiter is one of them who can be a long term solution for the RT spot. After the re-sign of Demar Dotson there is no rush for him to start. He can spend a year to learn the scheme, playbook. Catch the rhythm and learn from the good and long-time Buc Dotson. Next year he can be his heir on the right side of the Wall.

4/107 Darius Slayton WR / Auburn

This day (10th of March) no one speaks about the receiver need in Tampa. We have one of the best WR locker in the whole NFL. But in my scenario DeSean and Humphries both leave the sunny Tampa in free agency. After this the WR spot instantly become a need. Darius Slayton can be an instant replacement. He is an experienced route runner and showed his athletic skills at the Combine. There won’t be heavy push on him after Evans and Godwin so he can establish himself to a good WR3.

5/145 Kris Boyd CB / Texas

Developmental prospect for the future with a lot of question marks. I think he divided few of them with solid Combine results. Top 8 dash speed, impressive agility drills and the most bench press with 19. He can be a strong special team contributor after Ryan Smith departure.

Kris was in national spotlight after a weird question: Does he have two testicles…

The 6th and 7th round picks went to Arizona and Cleveland via trades.
